Why I Built inneRVoice — The Story Behind a Privacy-First AI Assistant
I was tired of paying monthly subscriptions for AI tools that stored my conversations on their servers. So I built my own.
Every week, I was spending hours switching between ChatGPT, Otter.ai, and Notion during interview prep and meetings. Three different tabs, three different subscriptions, three different places storing my data.
The monthly bill? About $60. The annual cost? Over $700. And every single conversation I had was sitting on someone else's server.
That's when I asked myself: why am I renting access to AI models I could call directly?
The Problem with Existing Tools
Most AI productivity tools follow the same pattern: they act as middlemen between you and the AI provider. You pay them monthly, they call OpenAI or Anthropic on your behalf, add a markup, and store your data on their cloud.
For interview prep, this is especially concerning. Your practice answers, your weak points, your salary expectations — all stored on servers you don't control.
The BYOK Approach
BYOK stands for Bring Your Own Key. Instead of paying a middleman, you get your own API key from Anthropic or OpenAI (takes 2 minutes), add it to the app, and every AI call goes directly from your machine to the provider.
The cost? Pennies per question. A typical interview practice session costs less than $0.10 in API usage. Compare that to $20-50/month for subscription tools.
What inneRVoice Does
I built inneRVoice as a Windows desktop app that combines everything I needed in one place:
- AI Chat with Claude and GPT-4 for real-time responses
- Voice Recording with OpenAI Whisper transcription
- Interview Lap Mode — press F8 to mark each question during practice
- Meeting Summaries — AI generates summaries with action items
- Floating Code Window — an always-on-top window that auto-types code
- Jira Integration — create tickets directly from conversations
- Flashcard Generator — quiz yourself on key concepts from sessions
And the most important feature: content protection. The app is invisible to screen sharing and screen recording. This is an OS-level feature that browser-based tools simply cannot provide.
One-Time Purchase, Not Subscription
I chose a one-time purchase model because I believe if a product works, you should own it. Pay once, use forever. Every update included.
Is this less profitable for me? Probably. But as a user myself, I know the value of owning your tools instead of renting them.
Try It Yourself
inneRVoice is available for Windows with a free trial — no credit card required. Download it, add your API keys, and see if it works for you.
